It is said that St Ignatius Loyola used to love going on to the roof of his house in Rome when he was superior general of the Jesuits and spend hours gazing at the starry skies. It put him in touch with the immensity and power of God who brought them all into existence. The same idea pervades today's reading from Isaiah. And the prophet's idea is that if God can bring into being and manage such a vast universe, how could anyone say that they were ignored by him? The young and energetic can become tired but not the Lord and not those who are aware where their energy comes from. With God, 'they put out wings like eagles... they run and do not grow weary.' And that is the message of Jesus in the Gospel too. He invites all of us, who feel the weariness of life, to go to him to find rest and peace. In the human person of Jesus we can find the loving and solicitous God whose loving power penetrates every corner of his vast creation. We can never be alone. Nowhere else can we find the same kind of comforting and peace.
