The readings at this time prepare us for the coming of the Lord. In the Gospel we see John the Baptist preaching repentance for sin and inviting the people to a ritual washing in the River Jordan to signify their sorrow for their sins. He sees himself as preparing the way for Jesus the Messiah who will baptise not just with water but with the Holy Spirit. In fact, at this time we can think of three comings of the Lord. The first is the one which we are now preparing to celebrate - Jesus' birth in Bethlehem. But the second reading reminds us of another coming - the final coming when God will take us all to Himself. For each one of us, this can happen at any time and we need to be always ready for it. Thirdly, there is the coming of Jesus into our daily lives through all the people and experiences we have. By welcoming and seeing Jesus in all those around us we are, in fact, making the best preparation for that final meeting with our loving Lord.

Teach us, Lord, to live our lives in constant readiness for Your coming into our lives.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That children may be protected and defended against every form of violence by means of the care taken by their families and of adequate social policies, all over the world.
