The Gospel reading reflects the missionary discourse wherein the Twelve apostles were commissioned to preach the Kingdom of Heaven which Jesus Himself preached. The characteristics of a missionary life as Jesus instructed, emphasized the Spirit of radical poverty and complete detachment. Why did Jesus demand such an austere and ascetical life from the missionaries?

Firstly, Jesus wanted them to know the urgency and importance of His mission and the single-mindedness which would enable them to be focused. Such a life of poverty would enhance their own credibility and authenticity. It is also a reflection on the necessity for a total dependence on God's providence.

The 'hospitality' they received was an indication of acceptance of the message received. The 'shaking' off of the dust from the apostles' feet when they left an unwelcoming home, has the implication of the custom of 'shaking' off of all Gentile dust from their feet before entering Palestine. By this symbolic act, the Jews were reminded that if they rejected the apostles or their message, they were to be treated like the Gentiles.

In the first reading, though rejected by his brothers, Joseph shows hospitality towards them. In this, Joseph shows the richness of God's love who holds no grudges but mercy, peace and love.

Lord, grant us the graces to care for others with compassion and love.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
