In today's first reading from the Book of Samuel we see God choosing David who will eventually replace Saul as King. Samuel feels a little fearful of Saul, as he sets out on his mission to go in search of David, but God promises to be with him to guide him on his way. Everything goes as God planned and Samuel meets Jesse and his sons and invites them to offer sacrifice with him. But it is not the strong and handsome one- the one Samuel sets his eyes on, who is chosen by God. God does not see as we see. We often look at outward appearances but God looks at the heart. The youngest son who was out tending the flock is the one God has chosen for this special mission and after Samuel anoints him with oil, the Spirit comes down on him and remains on him.

Right down through history God calls particular people for a special mission in life. Perhaps we ourselves are being called in some particular way in our parish or in our community. Often we may feel unworthy or inadequate to the task. But God gives the grace with each particular calling. In the sacrament of confir- mation we too were anointed with oil to strengthen us for our Christian journey, and to confirm us in our faith.

Lord we ask You today, " Help us to listen to what You may be calling us to at this time and give us the courage to respond, knowing that You will give us the grace we need."

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That all men and women may recognise that they are members of God's one family and end wars, injustice and discrimination among themselves.
