Fear can be a very effective muzzle that prevents us from speaking. Others might not like what we have to say, especially if we take an unpopular stand on something or stand up for what is right. Our silence sometimes is more damaging than the evil that others do. God assured Paul that He would be with him, and that he and his companions should speak out and not be silent. Although their boldness resulted in persecution and struggle, their spirits were unbroken and they were filled with the power of God. What are we afraid of? Do we think that we have nothing to offer, or that others might laugh at us? If what we are doing is right, God is certainly with us. We should not fear anything or anyone on the face of the earth when it comes to living and speaking the truth.

John uses the image of a woman in childbirth to describe the struggles and pain his disciples will face. Evil can appear to be victorious as it rejoices at the apparent defeat of goodness and justice. But this is temporary. Jesus has not forgotten us, and our hearts will rejoice when we meet him again. Faith in God who never abandons us is the key. If we know that we are loved by God and our struggles are temporary, we can bear almost anything. God does not give us more than we can bear. Our fidelity and our persistent love will enable us to be truly one with him. What in our own lives seems overpowering or painful? Do we feel alone or abandoned? Let us ask for Christ's heart and courage, and then face it with fresh resolve.

Lord, give me the spirit of courage and truth.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
