Like last Sunday, today's readings are concerned with the role of John the Baptist. If he is not the Messiah, why is he preaching and baptising? Today John makes clear that he is not the Messiah. "He was not the Light, only a witness to speak for the Light." His role was to lead people to the true Light, which was Jesus Christ. The Light is already in their midst but as yet unrecognised. Jesus looks like everyone else yet He is the One the straps of whose sandals John is not worthy to undo. He is the One described in the First Reading who will bring good news and liberation to the poor, the broken-hearted, those living in all kinds of bondage. Later, Jesus will identify His mission with this task. As we reflect and pray, let us hear addressed to ourselves the question of the Pharisees to John: "What have you to say about yourself?" Can I say that I am continuing the healing and liberating work of Jesus among those people who come into my life? What kind of difference do I make in other people's lives? To reflect on these questions could be a very good preparation for welcoming Christ this Christmas.

My soul rejoices in my God

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That the dignity of men and women according to the creator's plan may be ever more deeply understood.
