We could say that today's first reading from Isaiah is God's dream for our world, a dream to draw all people to Himself. There is an open invitation here, not just to the Jews in Jerusalem but to all peoples. This same invitation continues today. Jesus has been sent by the Father to fulfill this mission. John was once the burning and shining lamp whom people were content to follow. But John came testifying to the true light. Jesus is the light of the world, a light that shines in the darkness, a light that will never be put out. In this Advent season the first reading reminds us again to observe what is right, to do what is just, to love the Lord, so that together we can be joyful in the house of the Lord. The Lord's house is a house of prayer for all peoples.

What does this first reading invite me to do today? Do I appreciate my faith enough to invite others to share the good news of Christ's coming into the world? Do I help people to know the real meaning of Christmas or am I myself caught up in the materialistic aspect of it? Can I find space and quiet in my life for prayer so that I can invite Christ more fully into my home, my own heart this Christmas? Can I in some way be a light in the darkness of someone's life?

Let us pray that we may appreciate more fully the real meaning of Christmas and be able to joyfully celebrate this Feast.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
