In the Annunciation of John the Baptist, the themes of previous annunciations (Samuel, Samson) are repeated: sterility, intervention of God, anxiety, great future of the child to be born. The narrative forms a parallel with the annunciation of Jesus, but in such a manner that John appears as subordinated and oriented towards Jesus. The greatness of John is to be 'herald'. God enters into history breaking all natural schemes. John is fruit of a miracle, of grace. The first words of the angel are, "Do not be afraid." The message is not a punishment, but the Good News. The fruit most natural for us humans, of joy. The strength of the Child will come from the Spirit. His Mission will be to direct the hearts of us, humans, to our God and to point to Jesus.

The first reading from the Book of Judges reaffirms how God proceeds in the history of salvation. He chooses a sterile woman to be the mother of the one who would raise the spirit of His people and neutralize the power of the enemy. In this way, God proves His goodness and love which uses humanly weak creatures to bring to reality His plan of salvation.

Lord, be to me a rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me, for You are my rock and my fortress.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That the dignity of men and women according to the creator's plan may be ever more deeply understood.
