What Jesus shared with the disciples at this time of His life on earth, was full of consolation and assurance of His presence, yet with a sense of sadness and sorrow that He would soon depart from them.

The parable of the woman in labour is the illustration of the apocalyptic reversal, an image of the messianic age in the Old Testament (Is. 26:17-18). The promise that Jesus made shows the new relationship of the disciples with the heavenly Father whom they could approach with confidence in prayer. This is revealed in St Paul's missionary experience in the Church of Corinth when the people turned against him, insulted himand took him to court. It is here that the Lord assured him of His presence in accompanying him.

This same experience is very much that of many Christians who continue to strive for the realization of God's kingdom on earth especially in their work for justice and peace; despite difficulties and trials. We also have Jesus' assurance when He said, "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but not the person". (Mt. 10:28).
