Andrew, whose feast we celebrate today, was one of the first four disciples called by Jesus and a brother of Peter. In fact, he was among the first to answer the call of Jesus (in John's gospel) and it was he who brought his brother Simon to Jesus. It was he who brought to Jesus the boy with the bread which was multiplied to feed 5,000 (John 6) and finally, he together with Philip, brought two "Greeks" to "see Jesus" in response to their request (John 12). And this ties in with the First Reading from Romans where Paul says that the call of Jesus is extended to every single person. But that call will not be responded to if it is not heard. This is exactly what Andrew did. He heard the call, he responded and then he brought his brother and later two Gentiles to Jesus. For us it must be the same. It is not enough to believe in Jesus for our own personal salvation. It is mandatory that we share our faith with others and introduce them to Jesus and his Way. We are called to be disciples, followers of Jesus, but also called to be apostles, heralds of God's word which we do by our words, actions and relationships.
