INTENTION : That Christ, meek and humble of heart, may inspire those responsible for nations to use power wisely and responsibly.

From the day we are born we grow up in a world full of competition and the struggle for a balance of power. In this environment our thoughts seek a point of reference, some principles of order, some confidence. We use our language to master what is resistant and give order to this changing reality. We use it to assert or confirm our position as man or woman, employer or employee, as child or parent, believer or pastor.

We see how power in international politics can be used for good or evil. When power is exercised for one's own profit, rewarding and favouring those close to us who share the same tendencies, then power is abused. This is the best way to damage any institution we may be mandated to govern. However, the Gospels, make us understand that power is a gift to receive.

Like Jesus who was filed with the Holy Spirit we are to follow ways which are different from those proposed by the "powerful" of this world. Every leader knows that power is given by God to be exercised responsibly. Let us pray that the way of Christ, meek and humble of heart, will inspire us to use whatever power we may have wisely and responsibly for the benefit of all under our care.
