The relations between nations and among individuals in all ages clearly indicate that the principal cause of dissensions is inordinate desires rooted in human nature. As a result of these inordinate desires, human rights have been trampled upon to satisfy man's lust for pleasure and power, corrupting those in authority and oppressing the weak and helpless. It is necessary for us to become more convinced that we are merely God's instruments in fulfilling His divine purpose in giving us a share in His authority, respecting the rights of others and using His gifts to us to serve rather than be served.

The example and teaching of Jesus in this respect illustrate the attitude of humility and service rather than that of pride and self-satisfaction. Having divested Himself of His Godhead, the Son of God became the "suffering servant of Yahweh," offering His life to put all humankind right with His heavenly Father. He taught us to serve, especially the poor and the needy, doing to the least of human beings as though it were done to God Himself.

Heavenly Father, You give Your grace to the humble who acknowledge You as the source of their very being and dispenser of all gifts. Help us to imitate the humility of Jesus and overcome our pride and our sinful desires in our relations with our fellow human beings. Amen.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That Christians may use literature, art and the mass-media to greater advantage in order to favour a culture which defends and promotes the values of the human person.
