We saw last week that, after feeding the people with the bread, Jesus had fled the crowds who wanted to make Him king and His disciples had been sent back to Capernaum. But today we see the crowds still looking for Jesus and they find him in Capernaum. Jesus tells them they are not looking for Him because of what happened on the mountain but because they got a big free meal. They missed the whole meaning of the 'sign' that had taken place. It was the sign of a totally different kind of food that Jesus wanted them to look for, a "food that endures to eternal life." The kind of food that Jesus came to give them. That food was an understanding of the deepest meaning of life and how that was to be found. And what were they to do to get that food which would involve them living in the way that pleased God? The answer of Jesus is simple: "Believe in the one God has sent." In other words, they are to believe in Jesus and to believe in Jesus means to entrust their whole lives to making their own the Way of living that Christ is proposing to them, above all by His own example. This was something to which St Peter Canisius, whose feast we celebrate today, totally dedicated himself.

Happy are those who have not seen and yet believe.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That the Lord may bless the farmers' work with an abundant harvest and sensitize the richer populations to the drama of hunger in the world.
