Today's Gospel narrative (Mk. 6:30-34) is written in view of the multiplication of Bread that follows (Mk. 6:35-44). Being in a lonely place 'by themselves' and the miracle that happened next indicates that the disciples had an important role in this event. They prepared themselves for this miracle by being away in solitude. This is a reminder to us that before any main decision to be made, there is a need to spend time with the Lord.

In verse 34, Jesus is portrayed as the compassionate messianic shepherd and teacher who reached out to the sheep without a shepherd. This explains why the feeding episode followed. As our shepherd, Jesus nourishes us with His teaching and food. He is our leader and guide.

King Solomon in the first reading asked God for the gift of discernment and Yahweh granted him this request. For us today, the pre-requisite for discernment is the need to be in consultation with God in prayer. It is an act of faith, trusting in God's divine providence and our abandonment to the movement of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Lord, grant us the Spirit of discernment so that all may be done according to Your divine plan and will.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
