For the third time in the Gospel of Mark Jesus foretells the suffering that will come His way in Jerusalem when He pours out His life as a ransom for many. Instead of responding with compassion, however, his disciples ask for places of glory and honour. Jesus does not scold them, but rather, encourages their desire for greatness. True greatness comes through a life of service, just as Jesus willingly gave his life in service to all.

Today the Church remembers Philip Neri, an Italian priest and founder of the Oratorians. Among other things, Philip Neri is known for his emphasis on humility. He was not afraid to use humour and even practical jokes to help people come to a deeper appreciation of this virtue.

Humility flows from a realization of total dependence on God for all that we have. Christ calls us to be free of the pursuit of glory, fame and wealth that are often a part of our society. Ultimately, these things are unfulfilling in themselves; they wither like the grass. Christ offers us an alternative-working with him to continue his mission here and now. Humble service to others may not be very flashy or even easy, but Christ promises that its fruit is true greatness.

Lord, whom are You calling me to serve today?

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That the shameful and monstrous trafficking in human beings, which sadly involves millions of women and children, may stop.
