As Jesus begins to move toward Jerusalem, he immediately faces opposition. The disciples ask if they should use fire to punish the people opposed to him. Jesus, however, knows that such a strategy is a dead end. Violence will not ultimately win hearts over to God. If the relationship is to be authentic and lasting, people must choose to come to God freely.

The first reading vividly describes just such a scene. Zechariah is writing after the time of exile. The people of Israel have now seen firsthand that there are many nations and people beyond their borders. Zechariah prophecies that people will come from such nations and cultures. They will recognize the presence of God amidst the Jewish people and urgently ask to be led to God. People from many nations will not just seek God, but seek God with a passion.

In whom or where do I recognize God present in my life today? Do I have an urgent desire to be led closer to God?

Lord, give me the courage to seek You with a passion.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
