In the Gospels, Mary Magdalene is one of the first, if not the first person, to arrive at the empty tomb. She is a witness to the good news that Jesus is alive!

We hear in the Gospel of John, that Mary does not recognize Jesus at first. The moment of recognition comes when Jesus calls her by name. The shepherd knows his sheep personally and they know his voice. She has found Jesus - but now in a whole new way - he is not dead, but alive! She tells others this good news.

Yet what brought Mary to the tomb so early in the morning while it was still dark? The reading from Song of Songs describes a woman in love. Her soul longs to be united with the one whom she loves. She will not be at peace until she finds him.

Mary Magdalene is a model for our relationship with Jesus. She recognizes that only Jesus can bring real fulfillment to her life. Though Mary cannot hold onto Jesus, she discovers that he is indeed alive. He is present with her and blessing her.

Do I long to be at peace about something? Do I long to be blessed by Jesus in some way? ...Ask him for what you desire.

Lord, help me to recognize You in this day.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That World Youth Day in Brazil may encourage all young Christians to become disciples and missionaries of the Gospel.
