It is not God's job to make us rich, prosperous, or successful. Amos had harsh words for the wealthy in the land - not because they were wealthy, but because of their indifference to the terrible plight of the poor and the nation. The opposite of love is not hatred but indifference, and when people feel contented and prosperous indifference is a very real danger. The warning of Amos was clear: don't cling to it, it can and will be taken away. Paul also warned against those who used their faith for power or gain. The only thing that counts in the eyes of Jesus is righteousness, godliness, faith, love, and endurance. These are the only things that we can take with us.

The rich man in the story was so wrapped up in his wealth and comfortable life that he wasn't even aware that Lazarus was alive - true indifference! Even in torment he attempts to throw his authority around by ordering Lazarus to bring him water but it was too late! He can't even warn his brothers - after all, they have their religious tradition and they know what God asks of them. Wealth and abundance are good - but they are meant to be shared rather than hoarded. Let our resources be a source of comfort for others, and let us always take notice of the needs of those around us.

Lord, guard me from the sin of indifference.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That people today, often overwhelmed by noise, may rediscover the value of silence to the voice of God and their brothers and sisters.
