Sometimes we need to refresh our memories concerning the goodness and mercy of God. It is too easy to forget everything that God has done for us and get lost in the negativity or despair of the present. The Passover was Israel's remembrance of the mercy and power of God that was revealed in their liberation from bondage and escape from Egypt. Through the centuries it was a reminder that they could depend on God and it was a call to remain faithful despite persecution.

For Paul, the Lord's Supper was also a remembrance of the compassion and power of God manifested in Jesus Christ. The Supper made a statement - it was a proclamation both of God's mercy and the resurrection of Jesus that will inspire people until the end of time. That is why the commitment, humility, compassion, and equality of those gathered at the Supper is so important. In John's Gospel, Jesus stressed humble service and love as the expression of the meaning of the Eucharist. It is not to fulfill an obligation or guarantee one's own salvation - it is a public commitment to follow in the footsteps of Jesus and to serve others. We should remember that when we gather around the table of the Lord, we celebrate joyfully the love and the mercy of God. But we also make a response that is pleasing to God - we vow to renew our loyalty and commitment to our call. It's all about compassion, justice, and service, and we need to carry it with us throughout the week.

Lord, help me to deepen my commitment to service.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
