Sometimes we are unaware of the significance of those we meet each day. The Ethiopian eunuch probably had no idea that Philip had been brought by the Spirit to open the Scriptures for him and lead him to faith. Their 'chance' dialogue (there are no coincidences!) had profound consequences for the eunuch and his nation, for he brought the faith with him to his people. We may think that we are alone, but we are not. Each day God sends us people to guide, teach, and challenge us. If we have an open heart and mind, we will be ready for the encounter.

What draws some people to Jesus? The reading insists that it is God who opens the path to faith. This doesn't mean that it is some sort of elite club - God invites everyone - but some are open to the invitation while others are not. Jesus said that those who come 'have been taught by God.' In other words, their minds and hearts were open to being taught and led. Many are not - even some who claim to be very religious. Those who do respond to Jesus with faith will receive eternal life, both now in this life and after they die. Jesus is the bread who feeds us, and if we allow ourselves to be sustained and nourished by God then we have passed from death to life. Eternal life is living in the conscious presence and awareness of God, and we do not have to wait until we die. Are we prepared to be taught and to be led?

Lord, teach and lead me.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That people may learn to respect creation and care for it as a gift of God.
