In this short Gospel passage, Jesus uses two images to teach us that our faith is to be a responsible faith. We sometimes express this by affirming that every gift is a task. The light of faith is a great gift. But, as Pope Francis has emphasized several times, we must share that gift with others. A light is meant to shine out and scatter the darkness. The more we let God's light shine through our life, the more it will illuminate our own hearts. Sharing our faith with others will strengthen, not lessen, the faith we enjoy: those who have will receive more not by hoarding it but by sharing it.

Though this may be too subtle, it seems as if Jesus contrasts those who really possess something and those who only think they possess it. Those who really possess the gift of faith will exercise apostolic responsibility by sharing it. Those who think they have faith but make no effort to share it are in danger of losing what faith they think they possess.

Lord, grant us a true appreciation of the gift of faith so that we may have the courage to share it with others.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
