Ruth was a shining example of loyalty and faithful love, which are also the qualities of God. She gave up everything to follow and care for her mother-in-law Naomi. Her great qualities won her the respect of Boaz, whom she eventually married. She became the mother of Obed, who was the grandfather of king David. That also made her the ancestor of Jesus, as we see in Matthew's genealogy. This was despite the fact that she was not an Israelite, but from Moab. When we live in faithfulness, love, and integrity, we bestow blessings on generations not yet born. Our goodness goes on forever.

Jesus seldom lost his temper and rarely condemned anyone. But he clearly made an exception when those in authority dominated others and made life miserable for them. He condemned those who heaped rules and regulations on others but did nothing to help ease their burdens. This happens in all religions in every age, so the Pharisees were not exceptional. Pope Francis has warned us repeatedly of this danger and has tried to help others in their struggles. Jesus also warned against giving away our freedom and our minds and hearts to others. There is only one real teacher - Jesus - and when we blindly follow the words and directions of others, we have given up our birthright as Christians. Let us seek and listen to the inner voice of the Lord Jesus, our teacher, friend, and spiritual guide. We are never alone.

Lord, be my teacher and guide.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
