Paul saved himself by turning his interrogators against each other. The Pharisees believed in the resurrection, while the Sadducees did not. In this argument, Paul was on the side of the Pharisees. Death and the afterlife was a hot issue then, just as it is now. Even for believers, it is a great mystery. But we can be sure of one thing: we can trust God. God is love; at the deepest part of ourselves, so are we. Love will endure for eternity. It is so important in this life to live according to our own true nature, which is love.

Jesus prayed that his followers may be one. This does not mean church unity, as important as that is, but unity in Jesus and in God. Jesus invited us to participate in the life of the trinity, even in this life. Jesus and the Father dwell in each other in perfect unity, and they will make their home in the hearts and souls of those who keep his commandments and walk in love. We can enjoy the same sort of spiritual intimacy and awareness. This is quite a promise — why does it seem so strange and rare? Jesus made it clear that it is necessary to dwell or abide in him continually, not just occasionally, and to put on his mind and heart. If we are willing to do that, the promise will come alive for us. Love is the way to God; in fact, the only way.

Lord, may I abide in You always.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That national leaders may firmly commit themselves to ending the arms trade, which victimizes so many innocent people.
