Even after the destruction of the temple and the exile in Babylon, there was hope. Help came from an unlikely source - the Israelites' captors. The Persian king authorized and financed rebuilding the temple, and prepared for the return of the captives. We should never get caught in the negative events of our lives. It is never the end; there can always be a fresh beginning. God intends life and happiness for us and is always at work on our behalf.

After Jesus turns towards Jerusalem, the tempo increases, along with expectations for discipleship. No delays, excuses, or half-measures are allowed! A real disciple must be willing to live with some insecurity and unpredictability. One cannot be half-hearted in one's commitment, for that is like putting hands to the plough and looking back. Nothing good ever comes from a tepid and lackluster attitude. Even the obligations of culture and family should not come before one's commitment to discipleship. These are hard sayings, but the gospel never pretended to be comfortable or easy. There is a huge difference between belonging to a church and being a Christian disciple. We have too many of the first, and not nearly enough of the second. Let us recommit ourselves to follow the Lord in the most fervent and zealous way we can.
