"Why do you not judge for yourself what is just?" Jesus seems to imply that we all have a natural sense of the meaning of justice. He is not, of course, denying the need of courts and justice systems. He is placing our sense of justice in the wider context of our God-given ability to discern. He uses our perception of weather conditions as a sort parable to teach us ways of using our capacity for discernment.

In all our dealings with others, we ought, almost without thinking, act in a just way. Just relationships and dealings with others ought to be second nature to us. Because of our faith and the love of God poured into our hearts, we are capable, in the light of God's revelation, of judging for ourselves what is just, what is good, loving, merciful and life-giving.

Jesus instructed us to strive to be as perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect. This is not to compare us with God, but an encouragement that everything we do and say should reflect the justice, goodness, patience and tolerance of God.
