Pride and competition can be our destruction. Saul was angry and jealous because many of the people sang David's praises louder and more enthusiastically than his. As David's reputation grew, Saul felt diminished, and began to lash out in rage and paranoia. True humility is being comfortable with who and what we are. We can always strive to grow and improve, but this should be for its own sake and not because we feel angry or threatened by the success of others. So much of our grief stems from our attempts to outshine others - it is far better to thank God, each day, for who and what we are. To do otherwise is to reject and dishonour the gift of life that we received from God.

The demons and evil spirits seemed to know exactly who and what Jesus was, and they were afraid. He forbade them to speak. Others seemed to be attracted to Jesus because of his healings and exorcisms, although they probably did not understand much about him. They were driven by desperation and need, just as so many are today. When those who bear the name of Christ give hope, courage, compassion, and enlightenment, people will come. But when platitudes, harsh language, or condemnation are the only dishes on the table, they will stay away, and we should not be surprised. Let us each day strive to give others hope and healing.

Lord, I thank You for who I am.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
