The Roman governor Festus did not know what to make of Paul. Why were his own people so against
him? And why had Paul requested a trial before the emperor? Festus was granting Paul all due legal process, but he did not understand what this was all about. In matters of religion, passions are often aroused that sometimes lead to violence. People do not listen to one another, and they lash out in fear. We see this in our own time. It is a reminder to allow emotions to cool and to dialogue in a sane and civil manner with those who disagree with us. Legal adherence does not diminish our compassion.
Three times Peter denied Jesus and three times Jesus put the question to him - do you love Me? Peter responded yes with great intensity the third time. The point is this: love is expressed in deeds, not just in words. If Peter loved Jesus, he had to show this by his selfless and loving care of the members of the community. Tending sheep and feeding lambs means encouraging, guiding, setting an example, forgiving, and showing compassionate love. However, Jesus' words - "when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish to go" (v18) is the ultimate submission to life. More than a model for leadership, it is a model of loving till the end.
Lord, let my love end in You, that my support and comfort for others be life redeeming.
