The Pentecost event in Acts depicted a strong wind shaking their room and tongues of fire resting on the Apostles; it was a transformative experience that emboldened their belief and also empowered them to communicate. Their message of repentance is heard and understood by all-the linguistic tower of monopoly, like the tower of Babel, has collapsed. This is a way of saying that the message of Jesus is for all and can be understood by all. And this is so because, deep down, the message of God through Jesus speaks to the deepest desires of each one's heart. It is a clear message of compassion by the once weaklings in faith-disciples become towers of faith.
We see this connection in John's Resurrection narrative, Jesus breathed the spirit upon His disciples after greeting them with peace. He breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone's sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven" (Jn 20:22-23). Earlier Jesus assured His disciples that love is to be the criterion of being home with Him and the Father, a home where room for forgiveness is amply provided (Jn 14:23).
Reading the signs of our times, surely the language of the Spirit for us now is the language of compassion that is understood by all. All we, like sheep, have gone astray (Is 53:6), compassion is the Pentecostal language that touches wounds inflicted by guilt.
Holy Spirit, come upon us and fill us with compassion that breaks the barriers of prejudice.
