A familiar question was asked "What is the golden rule?" Then a youngster in the crowd answered "Work-life balance". It differs from the familiar Golden Rule - "Do unto others as you would have them do to you."
Ponder this: In our current digital opulence, work-life balance seems to have become the pinnacle of one's life-a notion heavily promoted by affluent society and the media. The latest electronic gadgets and exclusive beauty brands, boosted by flashy advertisements and celebrities' lifestyles, have enticed young minds-and us-to strive likewise. After all, what's the point of living in this world if not for going the extra mile to look better, feel greater, and live well? However, Jesus' caution is a timeless gem - "For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be." (v 21)
Pursuing success or becoming wealthy is not inherently wrong, when it is viewed as a means to an end (just as some saints used their wealth to help others). Yet, we excel at managing earthly passing things, but fail to be good custodians of what is eternal and yet to come. Jesus forewarned "store up treasures in heaven" (Matthew 6:20).
Heed Jesus' advice, work for the things of heaven: live a life of intimacy with God and love your neighbour, such a rule will bring true and eternal happiness. Only then, will the notion proposed by the youngster be correct! Maybe our true goal really is an attitude - "work as if you are in heaven."
Dear Lord, let Your golden rule be the divine compass of our earthly journey.
