The consistency between words and actions - that's what exposes a hypocrite. We label hypocrites as people who pretend to be virtuous and often advocating proper norms that they themselves don't practise and prevent others from accomplishing the goal. Hypocrites are a jealous breed of people. If I examine myself regularly, do I fall into the same trap of saying one thing and doing the opposite of what I say? Jesus publicly announces the Pharisaic woes, to be religiously pious but malicious in judging others. They represent people who are noted to be arrogant and they dirty other people's compound with their rubbish.
Jesus highlights today that we do not call Him, "Lord, Lord," and yet don't do what He says. Those who truly listen to His word and act upon them will be like someone who builds one's foundation on solid rock, and not on shifting sand.
Another image that Jesus uses is: every tree can be told by its own fruit. Therefore, hypocrites will be known by the actions that follow from their words. If their actions are different from what they say, then it's like what Jesus says, figs do not come from thorns or grapes from brambles. Furthermore, Jesus also says a person's words flow out of what fills his heart.
Do our actions reflect the words we say and vice-versa? If not, we have not listened to the words of Jesus and act truthfully.
Lord Jesus, may the words of my mouth be in tune with my actions.
