Every time I preside over a funeral, I always remind the congregation not to think about when or how we pass on, but rather, to think about what we can do before we pass on. We always worry about unnecessary things and we often overthink matters. We rarely think of how to make use of our God-given talents. Worse, sometimes we even deny that we have gifts and talents, and use humility as an excuse. St Teresa of Avila asks : if God wishes to give us gifts, why should we reject it? We think that by rejecting it, we are being humble, but in essence, we are saying that we do not want God's gifts!
The truth is - many of us are afraid to utilise our gifts and talents, because the more we use them, the more responsibility we will be given. We want to live simple and uncomplicated lives, but that would also be irresponsible. When the king comes and asks us for an account of our life, will we be able to say that we have multiplied what He has given us?
Let us pray for a spirit of stewardship, to give glory to God by using our gifts and talents.
Lord Jesus, help me to be grateful, and make me a good disciple and trustworthy steward.
