God is blunt and clear about what He expects from us. He did not ask for temples or elaborate theologies, but that we care for one another. Isaiah urges us to share our food, shelter, and other resources with those in need. If we do that, then God will hear our prayer when we call upon Him. This applies to societies and nations, as well as individuals.

Paul came before the Corinthian community with nothing - he lacked an impressive presence and self-confidence. He came in weakness and trembling, but in the power of the Spirit. Christ crucified is God's wisdom but humans do not recognise it, because they fear weakness, and lack trust in God's power and grace. If we walk in faith, then we are strong when we are weak.

Jesus uses two powerful symbols in addressing His followers: salt and light. Salt is for preservation and purification, while light is for wisdom and holiness. Those believers who walk with Christ are truly salt and light for a dark and fearful world. We have incredible power to influence and change the world just by the manner of our lives. In these dark times, it is vital that we be even more committed to the Lord and to walking in His ways. Much depends on our ability and willingness to do so.

Lord, may I be salt and light for others.
