Humanity as a whole has always been fascinated by miracles. From the Old Testament up to the time of Jesus, we read numerous accounts of miracles performed by prophets and, especially by Jesus. While miracles are seen as divine manifestation, it can sometimes lead us down the wrong path. The question is, how can something good lead us astray?
We have to understand the difference between the gift and the Giver. When we focus too much on the gift, we will eventually forget who the Giver is. There is much fascination with miracles, and wherever a miracle is declared, people will flock to that site of the purported miracle on pilgrimages. However, my question is this - after seeing the manifestation of the miracle, does it help us to become better people? If, after coming back from these miraculous sites nothing changes, then what is the point of going in the first place?
Jesus probably foresaw this possibility and this was why He told the deaf man not to tell anyone about it, performing the miracle in private. All people want is quick fixes but life is not about quick fixes. Once we focus too much on the gift, we will eventually forget the Giver. Let us pray for the gift of discernment and to truly look for the Giver and not the gifts.
O God, You are the Giver of gifts; may I not forget You when I get my gifts.
