We have all heard that "God does not tempt us, but God does test us." What's the difference between test and temptation? Tests are to strengthen faith, develop character, and encourage maturity and growth. God can be the source of tests. God sends or allows tests in our life with the intention of helping us to grow and make us strong; more so that we are made aware of our dependence on God, as well as to bring us closer to Him.
Temptations are enticement or the pressure to give in to sin and to disobey God. Temptations come from all kinds of sources, for example, the world, the flesh, our own self- centred desires, or Satan; but not from God. Succumbing to temptations leads to sin, and ultimately to death, as St James mentions in today's first reading.
Passing tests and overcoming temptations are significant means of growth in the Christian life. Tests and temptations occur throughout our lives and are an important part of the process of maturing spiritually. Of course, whether it is temptation or testing, we should always be seeking God in prayer for help to overcome them.
In today's Gospel, Jesus reprimands the stubbornness and lack of openness on the part of the disciples. His strong scolding can be a test to them. How can the Master still label them as without perception after all this time? It is a bitter pill to swallow. But they will learn over time.
Lord, may I never be stubborn to Your call to me each day.
