Scientists given cloning go-ahead (BBC)

Stem cells would be used to treat diabetic patients

British scientists have been given permission to perform therapeutic cloning using human embryos for the first time.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority granted the licence to experts at the University of Newcastle.

They are investigating new treatments for conditions including diabetes, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease.

The controversial decision could open a new era of research by scientists looking for remedies for diseases.

How to alert our faithfuls about the importance of this piece of news?

Therapeutic cloning may sound quite acceptable even for the faithfuls. However, one must not forget that the ultimate bit of genetic engineering would always be cloning people.

I guess every one of us should at least ask this question : If tomorrow someone could prove that you were a clone, would you think your life was worth less or devalued?

As for the faithful, we might need to figure out the relationship between a cloned person and God?

there are two considerations in the issue. not all "cloning" are unethical.

concerning the source of cloning - if the cells are from a human embryo and the life of the embryo is thus "sacrificed". the event is unethical.

concerning the endpoint of cloning - if the aim is to clone out a person, then it devalues the dignity of that person.

but how if we clone out a "human" with all the organs (skin, internal organs, bones, muscles) except the brain, so as to facilitate therapeutic use?

that may make us go back to the ultimately basic and fundamental philosophical question - how is the human a person, and how to express it in scientific terms?
