The story of the two disciples going to Emmaus can be understood either as a picture of the Christian life in general or, more particularly, of the Eucharist, the sacrament of our Christian life. There is the sinfulness, symbolised by the running away from Jerusalem; there is the encounter with Jesus, not recognised in the stranger; there is the breaking open of the Word of God (by the Word of God!); there is the breaking and sharing of the one loaf (sharing in the life of Jesus, the Head of the Body); and, finally, there is the return to Jerusalem and the participation in the mission of evangelisation to bring the Good News to the ends of the earth. The Christian life is presented as a journey - which can go in either direction: away from the Centre or back to the Centre or a combination of both. The key to going in the right direction is to experience the 'burning' power of the Scriptures which, in turn, helps us to recognise the Lord in every member of the community each time we break the Bread and then to invite others to share the experience.

Jesus, you are the Way. Teach us how to follow You closely on that Road.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That those who hold positions of responsibility in the Church may offer a shining example of a life which is always responsive to the guidance of the Spirit.
