The First Reading expresses very well the contradictions that face the really good person. We often feel that if we are good and virtuous and, even more, because we are good and virtuous, people should be inspired to follow and imitate our good example. Experience tells us that many times the opposite is the case. It applies so perfectly to Jesus and to hundreds of others down the ages whose goodness has been resented, whose behaviour is seen as a condemnation and a threat and who have been as a result persecuted and even killed.

Jesus Himself has told us not to be surprised that we will be misunderstood and mistreated as He was. The following of Christ involves a 'counter-witness' to the prevailing values in our societies. Such a counter-witness will often be deeply resented, attacked, rubbished and ridiculed and it may invite even violence and death. At the same time we have to be very careful that our witness is based on truth, integrity and unconditional love. It is God we are proclaiming, not ourselves. "Let your good works be seen so that God may be praised."

Teach me, Lord, to keep loving even when I am not loved in return.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That the land, culture and all the rights of the indigenous populations of the world may be respected, so that true harmony between them and those among whom they live may be attained.
