Those who have seen the film 'The Passion of the Christ' have a good idea what the Cross meant in the life of Jesus and the terrible suffering which it involved. And people ask why did he go through this? Was it necessary? Maybe it was not strictly necessary but we are given a very good reason in today's Gospel: "God loves the world so much that he gave his only Son so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost but may have life without end." Jesus himself had said that the greatest love a person can show is to give their life for their friends. It is this love, this total emptying of himself in love (1st Reading), that gives meaning to the meaninglessness of so much suffering. In doing so, Jesus also identifies with the terrible suffering which we still see in our so-called 'civilised' times. Many Christians have followed in Jesus' footsteps. Am I ready to do the same?

Fill me, Lord, with Your love for all Your people.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
