The story of Lazarus and the rich man (he has no name and could be anybody) is in a part of Luke's Gospel which speaks about the way we are to use the gifts, including the material gifts, which God has given us. The scene is full of contrast. On the one hand, the rich man, dressed in expensive clothes, is enjoying a sumptuous meal. At the foot of the table is Lazarus (the poor man has a name; he is somebody), his body covered with sores and suffering (extreme for a Jew), enduring the humiliation of helplessly watching an unclean animal lick those sores. What is most striking is that nothing is happening and that is the point of the story. The rich man does not attack or abuse or drive out the beggar. He simply ignores him; he does nothing. "As often as you neglected to give the least of my brothers or sisters to eat or drink, or clothe or take them in, you neglected to do it to me." Our worst sins are probably those where we do nothing. Do we tell them in our confessions?

O Lord, may I be truly sensitive and respond to the needs of those around me.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
