Today's scripture informs us that it was in Antioch that the disciples were called Christians for the first time. Apparently the name was coined spontaneously, but it is indeed an appropriate name. "Christians" indicates much more than nationality or citizenship and infinitely more than membership in a club. To be a Christian is to be like Christ Himself, a child of God and an heir of God the Father's eternal kingdom. Through baptism we take on a whole new identity. In earlier times the popular name for baptism was christening, and that name brings out the true character of this fundamental sacrament. By baptism we are "christened," made like Christ.

Because we are Christians, we are most precious in the eyes of God. Jesus says about us, "I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish." Our new identity should give us great confidence in God's love. We can and should go through life with a sense of peace and serenity for we bear the name, "Christian".

Lord, make me a faithful witness of Your love.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That Christians may live their Sundays more truly as days of the Lord dedicated in a special way to God and their neighbour.
