The Song of Zechariah expresses deep longing for the Saviour of the world, as well as great joy at His coming after centuries of waiting. It carries also echoes of the troubles of His time in the repeated mention of enemies who opposed the people of God. In Jesus are fulfilled the promises which God made to Abraham and his descendants.

It will be John's role to prepare the people for the Messiah's coming by preaching 'a baptism of repentance' and good deeds as evidence of repentance (Lk. 3:8). To clarify the expression 'knowledge of salvation' St Luke speaks of the Messiah as 'the Rising Sun' who brings to all humankind 'the tender mercy of our God'. This is a new way of understanding God for people whose relationship with Him was guided mostly by fear of punishment. In His mercy God offers not only forgiveness of our sins, but also His friendship and constant help to walk in 'the path of peace', that is, in following His commandments. Thus, the 'Rising Sun' dispels the darkness of sin and brings the light and warmth of God's love and mercy.

Lord Jesus, in Your tender mercy You chose to be born like us. Help us to follow You in Your love and compassion for others.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
