The disciples are shown in the Gospel as constantly missing the true meaning of Jesus' words. Today in foretelling His passion He also speaks of rising again in glory. This triggers a request from the mother of James and John that they be given special places close to Jesus in His Kingdom. We call this 'pulling strings', 'getting in by the back door'. The other disciples are angry about this, only because they feel they have been cheated of something they also want. It is an opportunity for Jesus to tell them what following Him really means. It is not a question of climbing to the top of the heap but of being only concerned about using one's gifts and resources for the well-being of those around us. Service here is not self-abasement but it is love in action. Those who are outstanding in this will be the ones to be close to Jesus, who Himself came to serve and not be served.

Save me,O Lord, as I serve You.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
