Tenants claiming right to own the land is a fact throughout human history, whether their reasons are right or wrong. Remember the slogan of Marxist inspiration: "The land belongs to the tiller". Some Jewish Laws favoured this tendency. When a proselyte died intestate, his property became unoccupied land and went to the first claimant, and the tenants had the first opportunity to claim by occupation. Hence the plan of the tenants, in today's gospel, to kill the son is not far fetched. They want to remove an obstacle in their persuit of getting the land by way of killing the son. The description of all the details of the parable in Matthew casts no doubt as to how they were trying to lay claim to the land. The sins of the tenants are described with such overtones so as to provoke a reaction from the audience. That reaction is a sentence against Jewish leaders. Jesus does not have to say, as Prophet Nathan said to king David in 2 Sam 12:9, "You are those people!" because it is crystal clear.

Lord, deepen in me the desire to serve You. Steer me from self-centred ambition, and the evils it leads to.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
