People don't like to be challenged. It is far more pleasing to listen to a steady stream of praise and assurances that everything is just fine the way it is. We can react with anger, defensiveness, and at times even violence to criticism or reproof. Jeremiah's life is in danger because he challenges his nation: they are not walking in God's ways and have created an unjust society. But that is the job of a prophet - to be the conscience of a people. We don't treat prophets well whether they are those who challenge governments, organizations, or religious communities. But if the words hurt and provoke, there is a good chance that they contain at least some truth.

A truly wise and humble person learns from anyone - even one's 'enemies' - by being open to change. God comes hidden in the humblest and most ordinary of messengers. Each one of us has something to learn, but more importantly, something to teach. We can find many examples of compassion, courage, honesty, integrity, and other virtues in those around us, even the humblest. Let us take the time to listen to others with an open heart. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Lord, may I be always open to Your Word.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That the human family may know how to respect God's design for the world and thus become ever more aware of the great gift of God which creation represents for us.
