Today we recall the beheading of John the Baptist, who leapt in Elizabeth's womb at the approach of Mary who bore the child Jesus. He chose the life of an ascetic prophet, living on the outskirts of civilization, where he condemned the abuses of both the religious and political authorities of his time as well as the sinfulness of its people. His ministry brought him into conflict with all the authorities, and eventually he was arrested by the king for his outspoken condemnation of his behaviour. Later, in a travesty of justice, he was beheaded, simply because of the whim of a dancing girl.

Our first reading emphasizes that following the wisdom of God doesn't often make sense to the wisdom of the world. John's choices in life hardly fit into the system of values based on worldly wisdom, according to which getting ahead is far preferable to losing one's head! Living according to the values of the Gospel will inevitably make us look foolish in the eyes of the world, but ultimately we know that God's values are a more dependable guide to finding authentic life and meaning than the values championed on our billboards, in our newspapers, and on our television screens. Our values may lead us into actual conflict with those around us, but ultimately, they are the only foundation on which we can trust to building a life that is lasting, a life that has meaning and value.

Lord, You are the way, the truth and the life.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That the human family may know how to respect God's design for the world and thus become ever more aware of the great gift of God which creation represents for us.
