The readings are stern and remind us of the need for contrition if we are to receive Christ coming into the world. At the time of the passage from Ecclesiasticus (190BC), Israel was dominated by the Seleucid Greeks. The wise man Sirach pleads for loyalty to tradition (the law and the prophets) and criticizes the Greek way of life that knew not the God of Israel. God made Himself known clearly to the people. But, they were hardened in obstinacy. God did not destroy them totally in His anger but He permitted the people to suffer. He wanted to purify them and teach them through experience. The God of truth will prevail (Ps. 80). May the Shepherd of Israel, the strong God, save us and smile on us. May He protect us who are His own work. May He bring us back and we shall amend our lives.

Lord, we believe You are near and will come to save us.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That, faced by the growing expansion of the culture of violence and death, the Church may courageously promote the culture of life through all her apostolic and missionary activities.
