Unlimited power over others is too much of a temptation for some. Jezebel and Ahab conspire to rob an honest man of his land. But the land is Naboth's ancestral land and he will not part with it for any price. He respects his ancestors and his traditions too much to grab a quick profit for the land.

Now Jezebel uses all of the instruments of government to accuse Naboth falsely and have him put to death. It appears that they have gotten away with their monstrous deed, but later on we will see that God brings them to justice. Governments, businesses, and institutions of all kinds are held accountable to God, as are individuals. This should give us some hope and courage in the face of the world's violence and injustice. God always has the last word.

Matthew's words are very difficult - some would say almost impossible. Do not resist evil - turn the other cheek - go the extra mile - all these seem unrealistic in the face of violence and oppression. But Jesus is not telling us to be passive or cowardly. On the contrary, He wants us to be courageous and bold, to stand up to our oppressors and force them to respect us. We should not back down or accept an inferior status. But most of all, we must not play the game according to the oppressor's rules and defile ourselves and others with violence and hatred. The principle of 'an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth' - revenge - results in a blind and toothless world. Fear not! Love and truth will prevail.

Lord, help me to walk and live in truth.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That all Christians may cultivate a deep and personal friendship with Christ, in order to be able to communicate the strength of his love to every person they meet.
