INTENTION : That the Synod of Bishops may help the Pastors and theologians, the Catechists and promoters who are engaged in the service of the Word of God to courageously transmit the truth of faith in communion with the entire Church.

Throughout the history of the Church, the Apostles preached the word of Christ, taking care to hand it on intact to their successors, who in their turn transmitted it to subsequent generations until our own day. Transmission of the truth of faith does not mean accepting a certain number of abstract truths about the mysteries of God, of man, of life and death or of future realities.

The XII Ordinary Synod of Bishops this month is treating the topic: "The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church." A comprehensive understanding of this topic is essential today when there are people or groups trying to obscure our centuries-old Tradition by seeking to falsify the Word of Christ and removing those truths from the Gospel which in their view are too uncomfortable. They try to give the impression that everything is relative and subjective.

Yet the Church cannot silence the Spirit of Truth. The successors of the Apostles, together with the Pope, are responsible for the truth of the Gospel, and all Christians are called to share in this responsibility and accept its authoritative teachings. We must not yield to the temptation of relativism and selective interpretation of the Word of God. Only the whole truth can open us to adherence to Christ, dead and risen for our salvation.
