In the passage preceding today's Gospel Jesus begins his final journey to Jerusalem and all that will mean for him. Then, as Jesus and his disciples, continued their journey, Jesus is approached by three different people who wish to become His disciples. The first man promised to follow Jesus wherever He went. No doubt he was sincere but did he realise what he would be taking on? Did he have visions of becoming a famous and influential person? But to become a follower of Jesus he would have to be ready to lead a life of utter simplicity, only having the things he absolutely needed. In the next case, it is Jesus who takes the initiative in inviting someone to be a disciple. But the man asked to bury his father first. In other words, he wanted to postpone his discipleship until after his father's death. But the following of Jesus has to be unconditional. Lastly, a third man offers to be a disciple but only after saying goodbye to his family. What did that mean? How long was that going to take? The following of Jesus has to be unconditional and now. Of course, these examples are not to be taken with utter literalness but we know how easy it is to make what seems plausible excuses to postpone our giving ourselves to Jesus. Let me say an unconditional Yes today and, not just to day, but Now!

Dear Jesus, teach me to be generous, to give and not to count the cost.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
