Today's readings are an indictment on people's hypocrisy and the pursuit of a false self-image. The Gospel looks like an attack on the Pharisees but we should really see it directed towards members of the Christian community, especially its leaders. In fact, the words of Jesus are a warning to all people in authority. Jesus' words can be applied to many positions in our own society - executives, managers, doctors, lawyers, bishops, priests, civil servants, parents can all be included here. As Jesus says, ultimately we are all brothers and sisters. And elsewhere he tells us that the greatest among us is the one who best serves the needs of those around him rather than the one who has the most impressive titles. The perfect model is Jesus Himself, who "though in the form of God emptied himself... walked the path of obedience all the way to death... For this reason God raised him to the highest place" (Phil 2:7-9). And how are they to repent? By offering still more sacrifices? No, "make justice your aim." There can be no real repentance unless care is taken of the weakest and most needy in society. The focus is to be on them rather than on ourselves. Ultimately, God's desire is not to condemn but to call his people to genuine repentance. "Wash yourselves clean!"

Repent, for the Kingdom of God is close at hand.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That the world economy may be managed according to the principles of justice and equity, taking into account the real needs of peoples, especially the poorest.
